PCB bare boards come in single-sided, double-sided, and multilayer versions. For single- and double-sided boards, automated optical inspection systems are available on the market. Our equipment is theoretically capable of inspecting both single- and double-sided boards—but when it comes to multilayer boards, we’re out of options.
Let’s first explore what we can inspect in the PCB bare board industry.
1. In the PCB bare-board industry, it's common practice to perform open and short circuit tests on the board traces—this testing is similar to our ICT process, focusing solely on detecting opens and shorts. For higher-end boards, impedance testing is also conducted. However, this industry typically relies on dedicated ICT equipment that, while simple in technology, handles a very high number of test points—usually around 10,000 points.
2. For bare PCBs, whether using copper-clad laminate or solder-masked boards, the copper foil or tin foil must not overlap with the green oil coating to prevent short circuits—this issue can be detected by AOI inspection.
3. The bare PCB boards have numerous component holes, slots, and other features, some of which have very tight dimensional tolerances. To ensure these dimensions fall within the specified tolerances, we can rely on our AOI system for precise size measurements.
